Title: A65 Leaking loads of oil from drive chain housing
Post by: Barry H on 19 May, 2019, 13:04
I have recently purchased a 1971 BSA Lightning oil in frame - its been fully restored and looks as new, but suspect it was resorted several years ago and has never been run (0 miles on the clock, no discouloration on the down pipes etc.,)  it starts and runs but ships loads of oil out by the chain (not just a small leak) when it running, I've plugged the chain oiler pipe to eliminate that.

Looks like an internal seal has failed or worse something not installed

Is there anything that I can check or try before I have to send it away for professional help and strip down

Hi,
Sounds like it is 'wet sumping' and ditching the excess oil in the crankcase through the engine breather over the chain, I would suggest you don't plug the breather.

Best wishes...

I have a 1972 that I completely restored A65 with 3 miles on it. The oil gathers in the bottom of my engine after standing for a long time. Fortunately when mine starts it pumps it all straight back to the tank. Sounds like yours could have a pump problem. Worth draining the sump into a clean vessel and putting it back into the tank and starting up the engine. See if the pump is squirting oil back into the tank. My 500 Triumph does exactly what yours does except when I drain the sump first. I have not examined the pump yet as I am too busy with three projects, it's on my list. Let us know how you get on.

as you didnt rebuild it you wont know. breather disc on the end of the cam missing?
My A7 and T100 wont start if it has wet sumped, same as my old AJS Stormer 2 stroke racer.
how about rings blow past? what is compression like, that could be pressurising crankcase
