Title: Bsa A10 1954 - weird sound while cranking
Post by: piston jockey on 16 May, 2019, 19:01
Hi all,

Finally time to start my BSA A10 1954.... so i thouht...every time i kick there is a loud bang (klunck).
It's not the kickstarter hitting something. I've removed the timing side cover and hand cranked the engine but ever then i hear the same noise. It goes around pretty easy... until a certain point...then it's more difficult and then you hear the bang. It sound like it's coming from the primairy side.
But before I open everything up.. i wanted to ask if someone had the same issue before?

Kind regards

Nick

Hi Piston Jockey.
This might sound daft but do you get the clunk with the plugs out?
I've got a memory of a pal who inadvertently put a long reach plug in his bike. It turned over with a clunk!
Without knowing how you've built your bike and what you've changed/fixed/upgraded it's difficult to hazard a guess.

If it is a swinging arm model remove the 3 x 5/16 inch diamter front chaincase screws and see if that stops the noise, if it does the screws are too long and are touching the crankshaft. Or the 2 internal bolts holding the chaincase to crankcase could be too long.

If your bike is swinging arm is the gearbox loose is the clutch properly fitted, same for engine sprocket, is the primary chain properly adjusted?

Valve touching piston?

Hi,

Thank you JulienS!!
The 2 internal bolts holding the chaincase were to long! Cut the off 5mm which was sufficient!
No she's kicking freely!

Grtz
