Hi all - back again! Finally got the 66 Spitfire on the road but now having problems with the gear change. All the gears select fine except for 2nd to 3rd. Most of the time (sometimes it is ok) when I try to change up to 3rd from second nothing happens. If I tap the gear lever the opposite way and try again it will engage. I thought it was the return spring but all looks ok there. With the cover off and selecting by hand it is just the same but just lightly touching the gear lever and it clicks and then it will engage 3rd. Now I seem to remember I had this same problem with a previous A65 and I cured it but can't for the life of me remember how! Any ideas?
John.
I have exactly the same problem with my 1962 A50 so would also be interested to see any response.
Heres a thought could it be a worn cam plate had to renew mine on a A65 but carn't remember what for.Roy
US service bulletins from 1964 may be of interest.
Isn't this Forum brilliant! Thanks particularly to Julian for his Service Sheets. I am going to persevere with it for a while so I can continue riding but as soon as I get chance I will investigate and let you know.
Many thanks
John.
Hi,
I had the same issue. I think my issue isn't listed on the service sheets (apologies if it is), the gear change quadrant end that fits into the bearing plate was worn. I had to source another to solve the issue. I could have had it built up and turned it back to its original diameter.
Best wishes...
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have the same issue with my 1962 A50.
Having read the service sheets provided above by JulianS, I see that the two gearchange return lever stop pegs have been installed incorrectly as the flats on the pegs do not align with the contact surfaces of the return lever.
Are these pegs fitted from the outside into blind holes? If so, is it possible to remove and reposition them without removing the inner timing cover? Also, is it possible to remove the return lever from its shaft without removing the inner timing cover?
Thanks
Hi,
It is also worth checking that the return spring is acting equally on the return stop plate and that the stop plate is a good fit on the gear change and is well secured by the grub screw. It seems that everything is set up so that the selectors only act on the selector plate properly if everything is just right. If the return spring has been removed or renewed then try talking it off and turning it over. This spring can cause gear selection problems if it acts unevenly on the selector.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I'll check that out.
Andy
Hi, I'm having problems with the gear selection on my A10, (separate post), and came across this string of posts on A65 gearbox problems by chance. The 2 service bulletins posted by JulianS are very interesting. I am not familiar with the A65 gearbox, but is it similar to the A10 gearbox? Could some/all of the problems listed on the A65 service sheet also apply to the A10 gearbox?
Cheers, Cliff
Well thanks guys for all your help but before I took everything to pieces to check, it all of a sudden cured itself! Think I'll let sleeping dogs lie for the time being.
John.
