Hello there,
I've just posted this and the photos in the "What bike do you ride" topic to introduce myself, then thought it would be sensible to post here as well although it isn't really a model related enquiry.
I've had bikes since the early 60's and was a member of BSAOC in the 70s/80s. Still have the engine and RRT2 gearbox from my 1958 Road Rocket in the photo from 1969. Starting to put it together with frame, forks and wheels from a 1958 Triton I had around the same time.
Main reason for joining the forum is that I'm looking at a 441 Victor Special that seems to be a US import, unregistered. I can't contact the dealer until Monday and am wondering how much of a problem there would be to register it if the dealer has no NOVA?. He advertises a lot on Ebay but I've always had some doubts about him!.
Any advice gratefully received.
DVLA will not register an imported vehicle unless there is a NOVA.
NOVA is the responsibility of the importer but if he has not done it then you can, but you may find yourself with a bill from HMRC.
Many thanks for that, it's rather what I thought.
just done that and it isn't as difficult as it sounds . Start here . You can apply for a NOVA application online by registering for a Gateway account ( HM Revenue & Customs website , search NOVA 1) , this is the email i received when doing what you need .
Thanks Ducati 2242. Yes it looks quite straighforward. :)
Hi Silverfox. It really isn't a huge problem even if you've got no paperwork at all like I did for my Victor Special - coincidentally! All I had was a reciept from the seller. You apply to HMRC for the Nova certificate using their form, which takes a couple of weeks to come, I also enclosed a covering letter stating what I knew about when it was imported & by whom & how much I paid for it. Include a copy of the receipt. No duty was required to be paid by me. Then the application can be made to DVLA following the guidelines on this website for an age related number. Keep copies of everything you send em, including the dating certificate! Be meticulous & send them exactly what they need otherwise you'll be tooing & frowing - as others have had..... My application went very smoothly indeed it has to be said... Good luck!
Thanks Don, that is encouraging.!

I Recently "did" an A65 found in a barn in UK. Enquiries to Mr Foden showed that it was an ex USA import. Absolutely nothing paper wise. Only had a receipt from the guy that I bought from.
On advice from here I contacted HMRC and a very nice lady asked me for some details plus an email copy of the receipt and sent me a NOVA about two or three days later. No Sweat

Thanks for that interesting input Mike.
Hi
It's easy. You need a NOVA letter to prove the import duties have been paid, and you can do that as above through HMRC website, and it's free. Then you need to contact someone in the BSA Owner's club and they will email out a form (and lots of guidance) to determine that the bike is as you say and to date the machine for the age related reg. There is a fee for this, but the DVLA will require it. Then you need to fill out a V55/5 for the DVLA and send it off with the above NOVA and Dating/Validation forms from the BSAOC. It's not strictly necessary but the DVLA like your application to have a valid MOT, which you can do at your local bike shop on the VIN number.
