Title: Petrol taps
Post by: Mike Farmer on 03 Apr, 2019, 19:29
 :) :)

Hi . I want to put new petrol taps on my A50 but don't want to use the pull on type as fitted new with bike.  I would like to fit ordinary "twist" taps but not sure what to use. I don't really want to use adaptors but it would be OK if necessary.

So advice or suggestions please

Draganfly have a useful guide, Mike

The BAP type are reliable but look a bit modern for some folk  ;) Personally, Im happy if they dont leak.

Have changed all 4 of my British motorcycles to BAP taps, none have ever leaked. Only problem I have had was over-tightening the locknut to the tank and it fractured the tap threaded part and severed it (easily removed the stub); they are not made of strong metal, you have been warned!

Another vote for Bap taps.
I am gradually changing the taps on all my bikes to Bap taps. Fit and  forget and no more leaks.
Fed up with faffing with fettling originakls or leaky repros.
They may not look quite right but then neither does a burnt out BSA or torched shed.

Sorry to disappoint, but the reason the A50/A65 has the Back entry tap 68-0824 is there is not alot of space between the tap and the cylinder head and the petrol pipe has to bend significantly to avoid the head if it connects vertically. To get round this I have seen some with the 90 degree fitting used so the pipe comes out rearwards as nature (or BSA) intended. However, the currently available Brassform, British made correct taps are expensive and they come as a 1/4" BSP with a 1/4"-3/8" BSP reducer so you can position the tap to point rearward correctly. By the time you have bought the BAP (or any of the vertical taps) plus the 90 degree fittings, there ain't much change from the price of the brassform.
Also, I have always been wary of the BAP taps as they appear to be diecast zincy type of material and I thought they could crack when tightened.
Just my two pennorth!
