having a job trying to start the B33 powered WM20. motor is a 1947 and seems like a lot of friction or stiffness kicking it over. plug fouls easily Im wondering if its wet sumped and thats where the kicking over is stiff. its not been started for a few months but did start and banged puffed out black smoke and stopped.
Ive not had time yet to check underneath but is there a sump plate as the exploded picture I have is messy and wont be looking at it until the weekend so preparing the ground work.
Sounds very much like wet sumping. You may get it to start as it is, with effort, but I would advise draining the sump.
My B33 wouldn't start last weekend after it's winter sleep. Same problem and it started immediately after I had drained the sump and cleaned the plug. I fit a sump plate with drain plug to all my bikes to make draining a 2 minute job!
thanks for confirming Pete.
I always have the same problem with the Triumph and A7. battery flat, charge it then have to drain sump, by the time Ive got round to it, the battery has gone flat again.
will have a look for a plate then at the weekend.
presumably a weak spring, same as A7.
got all this fun to come again when the A50 gets played with
If it's like the M20/M21 bottom end (and I think they're the same) there should be a 1/4 Whitworth drain bolt left of the plate.
Both mine wet sump with enthusiasm.
On one I always drain and refill the tank before starting and the other has a tap in the oil line.
Cheers,
Bernie
thanks Bernie
I slackened off the sump plate, 4 nuts, got around a pint out.
sorted out the carb, fuel flow from tank wouldnt fill carb reservoir!!, And have had bike running three times.
