Title: Wheel Question
Post by: ClintB on 27 Feb, 2019, 16:40
I have had several questions about my bike dealing with the front end and trying to figure out what I needed to get to make things be close to orig. Just trying to get things back to orig running state and then can go back and make it look really good. I have 2 photos of different wheels I managed to get when I got the bike. 1 was on a non orig set of forks and other was loose that I snagged as a just in case.

Both seem to be a bsa wheel due to the stamping on the opposite side of the caliper mounts. However, not real sure what year or anything they are as I have not been able to find a part number stamp or anything. I am assuming I need to take the wheel apart to find this? Photo 3127 I think is the bsa wheel I want to go with my 1964 spitfire but little unsure it is the correct year as the hard vents seem really out of place and all the parts catalogs I have looked at so far are more of a drawing then a picture that you can tell what the hub should look like.

If anyone has any idea what either of the wheels are I would be grateful as I am hoping to put my new used correct forks on this weekend and having a wheel that is right would be nice.

They are made by the British Hub company and were fitted to the mid 1960s AJS and Matchless 250 singles and some Greeves bikes and probably others.

See this ebay item, it shows the trade mark;

Julian thanks for the help and you were correct on the mark and the inside of the hub. I thought that was just a manufacturer of BSA parts in the day. What I get for thinking about something that I am finding I know little about and should not assume anything. Research all.  and then that leads me to the next question I am afraid to ask. I assume this is probably an aftermarket replacement and not a dealer addon. Is there a reason I should replace this with an orig? What is the advantage of having this on the bike verses the orig?

Trying to understand the impact of keeping it verses replacing it in the scheme of a restore and function in just getting it running to start with.

During the 1960s bikes were often modified by owners who sought to improve performance for the use the bike was to be put and/or to produce an individual machine not like the next one. The Spitfire was used for competitive riding and the owner may have wanted to reduce the weight by using these light alloy hubs rather than the original cast  front.

The modifications are part of the bikes history but I think these brakes are just 6 inch diameter and I wonder how effective they would be on a 650.
