Title: seat foam replacement - good sources ?
Post by: hoogerbooger on 11 Feb, 2019, 20:18
The  seat foam on my B40 is obviously poorly.  If you rev the bike a rain of yellow 'dandruff ' descends. Very embarrassing.

Seat cover seems fine so hoping I can just buy the foam shaped preferably,or unshaped, somewhere & replace it myself. Anyone know a good source for the right sort of foam/pre-cut ?

( any other tips welcome)

Hi there - I have used RK Leighton for re-furbishing saddles in the past and they have done outstanding work. I now see that they are offering cover and foam kits. Might be worth a look. http://www.rk-leighton.co.uk/ (http://www.rk-leighton.co.uk/)

Replaced the seat foam in an A10 last yaer with new foam and clips form Leightons. Really good materials and service. He properly grilled me to make sure of the exact model and year when I phoned to order.

Thank you.

4 happy customers  sounds like a good reference to me.  I shall give them a bell for a quizzing.

I  now have the seat foam and clips from Leighton's &intend to fit later this week.

Any tips on fitting ?

(It looks to be closed cell so I am presuming it shouldn't absorb water if any rain gets through the  cover, so I'm  guessing it doesn't need wrapping/sealing ?  but might need some pressure/squeezing to get the clips on ?

Tips welcome

No, it doesn't need any film or anything to waterproof.
Mine was a tight fit put not difficult to do on a good worksurface.

There is a very good explanation in the Rupert Ratio book - Everything but the Engine on how to replace the seat foam.

I just bought some foam from a car upholsterer. Cost me about a fiver. I shaped it and wrapped it in some stockinette cloth ( the stuff used to polish your car etc). Took the old knackered foam so he could match the density. Used an electric carving knife to shape it.
Job was a goodun !

I may need to follow Adrain's lead !  I bought a seat foam that perfectly fits the pan....but not the cover !  Unfortunately the photos  and measurements I sent to Leighton's weren't clear enough to reveal this . (Leighton's were surprized the cover and old foam fitted the pan tidily  and said it's not the right cover  for the pan- although it certainly didn't obviously look wrong)

Anyway here's a quiz as I may soon have a spare cover. I attach a photo of old foam; new foam; cover and pan . So what seat foam and cover did I have i.e what model and year would it fit ??

The pan appears to be 40-9082 (by reference to Rupert Ratio) and might be original to my Sept 1964 B40F (as Rupert says this was fitted to B40's from 65 models on - but the 65 parts catalogue only lists 40-9080)
