I'm in the process of renovating my B40 1962 Distributor model. Before I starting taking apart I checked it ran and noticed that it suffered from the standard oil issues. When I got the bike it was mentioned about the clutch not being great as well. So being new to Brit bikes (always had Japanese before) I've read as much material as I could and got RRatio books. So the real learning now starts!
History of the bike is it's had a big end done and been apart so I am finding some bits that don't match manuals etc.
Oil Leak
I checked a few things and found after initially thinking it was the union joint which took off and sorted out, the leak was still there probably worse! It appeared to be coming from the timing casing. So I have the engine on the bench in a basic frame and after getting the kick start removed noticed it looked as if the oil was coming from around the kick start. So I have stripped the casing. I found the small return hole (in RR book) and put a needle in it and it does not appear to be blocked so the oil build up puzzled me. So I filled the gearbox with oil to see if the oil was coming from.
I walked away and came back an hour or so later and found oil on the bench (quite a bit) so I cleaned and placed elephants bog roll in various points to catch it before it flowed down casing and left it and came back half hour later and there is oil on the kickstart and gear change shafts also the lowest outer casing bolt hole (this could be the collecting point).
Question is is this supposed to happen?
In RR's book I read that if you use gearbox oil in a dizzy model you have to expect gearbox contamination of engine oil, so this implies that some would come through. I'm just surprised at the amount considering the engine is just sitting there!
Is this normal - or do I have issues further inside?
Dizzy question.
I marked the dizzy & casing before I removed the casing so I did not lose the timing point (RRation again). To make sure I know which bolts go where I put the bolts back in the holes. So I place the dissy bolt back in the hole to put a second mark on the dizzy and casing, but found that it does not appear to be able to get the dizzy to lock in one position. The caveat here is I did not check the dizzy to see if it move before I took things apart! (Yes a slow learner LOL) I am wondering if the bolt is long enough as saw a replacement on eBay described as 2 1/2" long and measuring the existing bolt it's about 2"
Clutch cable
Which reading service sheet 422A it mentions care should be taken to not lose the operating rack and ball. Can someone help here?
The guy that I got the B40 from mentioned a ball on the clutch side could be causing clutch issue so as I have found nothing I assume it's missing.
Does anyone have parts diagrams for timing side of a pre 64 B40? So far the ones I have are for side points and correct ones would probably help me with the clutch and dizzy issues. As I could them identify parts.
Thanks in advance
Re parts diagrams, have a look at the Draganfly BSA parts diagrams.
Also the website BSAunitsingles is a mine of information. Look at the download and resorces pages.
Cheers I have used the BSASingles one - had the part number and then via Draganfly can get the specs of a part. :D
