Title: D14 frame number
Post by: elevensies on 29 Jan, 2019, 11:35
hi all, just a quick one regarding the frame number on one of my bikes

the bike is a D14 c? trails type/ style bike. the engine is missing and the frame has had numerous welds, chops and grinds in life, and i can barely see all the numbers,

but its getting split down and sent for blasting which may help, hopefully the powder coater can note any thing he sees down before coating it

so the frame number is as far as i can make out (on the headstock, as the bottom mount does not exist) is D14C (possibly an 0 or 8 ) 191B(possibly 8) 175

does this sound about right?

thank you

11s

Hi, Looks like a 1968 bushman number D14C781B on, probably re stamped as only the later post office
bantams had the number on the headstock (leg shield bars covered the front engine mount)
probably not good to blast actual number as I have lost a faint one by blasting, hope this helps-
Martin

thank you for that appreciated that number you said could very well be it, i shall be careful around that area for blasting.

the frame has had the bottom mount removed, so another engine could be fitted, so quite possible that the number was stamped on the head stock, but again thats also been welded !!!! and ground and well who knows, so only partial numbers are visible, i will get a pic posted as soon as i have started to strip it down. weekend job

secondly, the swing arm number shows up as F4070216? so as a date comparison,  did the bushman get this swing arm for clearance, ? as its also used from what i can see on tiger cubs?
again quite possible that was changed at some point too??

Many Bantams had the lower number removed and put onto the Drayton Bantam frames for the cheats to have a new bike made and registered as a pre 65 or period twinshock. I have a Gollner Bantam Trials but it has original frame number and the mods are to the rear sub frame (As well as a bit of doctoring on the front)  . Be alert as you may have to register the bike on a 'Q' plate as many old bikes that have been donors for Drayton have had to be . One way round it is when on a 'Q' plate you can buy a cheap old reg plate and use that to keep the period look. All the best in your quest to do the bike but don't blame the DVLC if they can't register it on an age related plate...   Griff

i don't think you can put a private plate on a Q registered vehicle.

A "Q" plate comes with the complication of needing vehicle approval.

It is worth reading what DVLA have to say before investing too much in it.

thanks guys,
just had a look at the DVLA site, and its a bit of a spiders web.
it would need inspecting be someone, i cant see who it may be, although i suspect from other passages it comes down to the club to inspect ??
it requires period or classic reproduction parts..hmm in the main straightforward so not a big issue

i think this is a task i need to spend time researching to see if its worth it.

i think you would have to get it mot'd as well as any age exemption might not apply either.

Would it not be worth trying to get another frame with V5.
