Title: Bantam D14/4 ignition timing
Post by: Y13 Alan G on 15 Jan, 2019, 19:27
My D14/4 kicks back fiercely  when I try and start it. It has new ignition coil, wiring loom, points, condenser (from Distributor Doctor), HT lead and plug. I have also fitted a one mm head gasket (thicker than standard). The Workshop Manual states ignition timing is 60 thou BTDC. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Would retarding the ignition help?.

i would try retarding the ignition first to see if it helps.

;)

It is very difficult to set timing accurately using such a small figure BTDC.

The factory manual gives 16 1/2 degrees BTDC which can be set using a degree disc.

The standard factory head gasket is 50 thou for the D14.

Hi Julian, thanks for your reply. I have no trouble in setting the BTDC using a dial gauge. However, do you know where I can get a 50 thou (1.27mm) head gasket as the thickest one I can find on the internet is only one mm.

I am going to use one of Rex Caunts 1.5 mm head gaskets on by D13 engine, probably the cloest to 50 thou without using 2 x standard 25 thou gaskets which seem to come in the sets.

Hi Julian, Many thanks I'll get in touch with Rex Caunt Racing.

I've got one of the 1.5mm gaskets on my D14. The barrel needed boring and was at its maximum size so I bought one of Rex's oversized pistons ( 64mm) from I believe a Suzuki 185cc engine. I use the set timing (16.5 degrees BTDC) but Rex did suggest retarding it a fraction as modern fuels are not quite the same as they were in the 60's. I have no trouble with the engine starting or running and certainly never kicks back!
