Title: B50MX Tyres
Post by: petergj on 02 Dec, 2018, 21:06
I have a 1971 B50MX with off road tyres including a 20" front rim. I am in the process of road registering the bike for light green lane/long distance trail use and want to keep the 20" front rim but fit road legal tyres. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations - I realise I am severely limited if I want to keep the 20" rim on the front as the Ensign Universal tyre seems to be all that is available unless I can find something on ebay?
Any comments appreciated.
Thank you.

Have you looked at Heidenau tyres? They were recommended to me by a good wheelbuilder that I use, and  I have tried the road types on a couple of my road bikes and am very pleased with them. Their (rather slow) website shows a multitude of tyres which look as if they might suit you if they do the correct size; I'll leave it to you to wade through them to find out!

Richard, thanks for your suggestion. I have been on the Heidenau website and cannot find anything that will fit a 20 inch rim. I will contact them to see if they have anything suitable which is maybe not on their website.

The front wheel is currently fitted with a Vee Rubber 20 inch Moto X tyre which is marked not for road use. Looking at their website, this appears to be no longer available.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that a 20 inch Ensign Universal tyre may be my only option (or find a secondhand road legal tyre or fit a 21 inch rim!)

Thank you again for your suggestion.

Regards,

For on-road use Avon do a ribbed Speedmaster Mk2 3.00 x 20, but not much use for your off-roading I suppose.
