Title: B31 Rigid rear Mudguard
Post by: sidewaysid on 25 Nov, 2018, 13:28
Hi
I am looking for some dimensions really, I am (as some will know) building a  1948 B31, I found the remains of a rear mudguard, it was minus the rear bolted on section, and some of the mounting holes were rather poor, with the metal getting very thin, I have tried to get hold of one for nearly 12 Months, but they are rare. So decided the only thing was the ones from India, I ended up purchasing a pair from Mickeyspares in Delhi. They arrived yesterday, so today I was up early eager to see how the back one measured up, I was really disappointed to find it is 6" wide, my old one is 5 1/2 inch wide, so it just won't fit in the frame. does anyone know what the correct width should be, I don't think the original I had is incorrect as it matches up to everything, and is 5 1/2 inch wide..any comments.

Thanks in advance

Oh yes I have already sent my comments to bloody metal Mickey, and they are not for the faint heart. ah ah ah

Ah-yes..Metal Micky... had a helluva game with the rear guard on for my plunger B31- mounting brackets in the wrong place- to be fair they did offer to re-make a replacement but as I'd already painted it I just adapted to suit.

Don't take this the wrong way, but my rigid one is 6". And it's not an Indian reproduction.

I complained to Metal Mickey in Delhi, and he is making me a 5 inch one, don't know who is paying for shipping ??? Actually I have chopped a lump off the front one and am fitting it to my original, I will post pictures later.

Does this look like the part you need:

Nice B31 by the way!

Glen

Do you know in what sequence the rear mudguard stays attach at the frame lug, presently I lave the lifting handle behind the frame lug, then in front comes the one stay going to the rear of the guard, and finally the vertical stay ?? Is that correct.  Cheers

Hi,

I am working on a 1947 B33. Although I cannot confirm that it is correct, the order was, all on outside of the frame:

Lift handle on first
Upright is on second
And the rear horizontal is on last.

I do have a question for you also.
If you have a 7" half width Type 3 wheel on the front, could you tell be the wheel offset from the outside of the brake drum (with the backing plate off) to the outside of the rim?

Thanks
Rod

Mine are the same arrangement as yours, Rod. And the illustrated parts manual shows the same.

Reply to Rod
I have not a clue of the offset, I am sending my hubs to Central Wheels to build, they have done me proud in the past. I would like a go at it myself, however not this time, sorry for not having an answer, hopefully someone may come up with it.
