Last week I found my battery flat (B31 with Thorspark ignition). When I tried to charge it the charger declared the battery failed and cut out. The battery is 2yrs old and has a less than ideal time, having been charged, left to go flat , charged etc. The bike has a fairly cheap voltage regulator fitted in place of the old electro-mechanical original. Before I get another battery I am interested to hear views on cheap vs pricey solid state regulators. Are there any I should avoid, any which are generally recognised as being best?
Having fitted electronic ignition I am keen to have a good battery. And yes, I'm wondering about having the magneto overhauled to avoid all this. But it's more money!
Thanks.
DVR2 seems to do the job nicely :)
I used a JG 12 volt unit for over 30 years with good results now using a DVR2 12 volt again with good results. DVR2 much more compact than JG.
Several years ago I tried a cheap wassell 12 volt unit. Total waste of money failed to work properly.
I have used the DVR on several bikes for many years and the BSA car and am very pleased with them.
I use a V Reg 2 from AO Services. One thing I noted with electronic regulators that they won't bring the dynamo on line if you have a flat battery whereas with a mechanical regulator it will, or even work fine without a battery.
Thanks for information. DVR ahead on votes, although the VReg2 also looks good. It will be one of the two.
Is it a dynamo or an alternator version of the B31?
