I have just bought a 1967 B44 as a winter project, currently fitted with its original 6v energy transfer ignition. From what I have read so far, common wisdom seems to be to replace it with 12v electronic electronic ignition. I am concerned about the amount of work/expense involved in doing this i.e. new 12v alternator, battery, fabricate a battery tray & find somewhere to fit it, zener diode & heat sink, regulator and bulbs. In an ideal world I would like to have lights or at least a brake light but the main aim is ease of starting.
Does anyone have good experience of the original energy transfer system?
Is the 12v electronic ignition conversion using Pazon, Boyer or Wassel worth doing and have I exaggerated the issues?
Has anyone fitted the Electrex World system?
Any thoughts/comments gratefully received.
Hello Rob.
I've a B44 Victor Special that came to me with a simple electronic ignition only system, no alternator & no battery & fittings etc... As I wanted to run lights etc I opted to replace it with the Electrexworld kit of alternator / ignition kit that can charge a battery & provide AC for lighting. Bit pricey, but compared with everything else I'd need going a different route it works out cost effective in the end. The AC lighting output was feeble & I opted to run the lights from the small scooter battery I fitted, which is OK provided you don't try & run very high wattage lamps. I've converted all my lights now to LED which are manageable & bright! Good luck!!
Hi Don - did you re-wire your B44 with the Electrex kit (+) Earth or (-) as the Electrex diagram? I know that the kit copes with both options and 6 or 12 volt. I was just interested if you changed the polarity of the bike.
Hi CSX
As I had effectively a blank canvas with my bike I made a custom wiring loom & wired it negative earth to suit the components I was installing. I also didn't use the AC output from the Eletrexworld system for the lighting as per their suggestions as was installing a battery & ran it from that.
Hope that helps.
Cheers Don
Hi Don - I have done pretty much the same, I have made my own custom loom and intend running with a battery rather than a capacitor. I'm not sure if I should go + or - earth. I don't suppose I could be cheeky and ask for a simplified diagram of what you have done from the Alternator / reg/rec to battery and then on to the fuse / earth could I? I would prefer to get it right first time and check my system I have not yet hooked up the battery and lighting circuit just the ignition.
Hi CSX
Here you go..... this is the wiring diagram for my bike as drawn by a friend from my pencil sketch. Hope it helps!
Cheers Don.
Fantastic - many thanks Don thats terrific - I will check and compare with mine. My intention now is to run it as a 12v (cut blue wire) and replace all the bulbs with LED's. Your guide will help me.
