Title: M21 rigid - spoke problems
Post by: berniej on 11 Aug, 2018, 11:49
I've got the front hub offset now - 16mm for the front with the 8" half width hub so started lacing.

I'm sure I have the right spokes and lacing pattern but the spoke ends just won't sit in the conical side.

Spokes are 67-5545 which are 8 7/8" with a 45 degree end.

With this spoke pattern the ends won't lie flat in the hub as per pics below and are also bowing slightly. Only getting the nipple half way up the thread before it tightens.
If I rotate each spoke 'back' by four rim holes then they lie nicely in the hub but protrude too far through the rim so that's not right.

Seems to me that the only way these can lie nicely in the hub is if the ends are at 90 degrees but every source I've checked for these spokes shows 45.

Any thoughts on this please?

M21 spokes listed as part 65 5872 length 8 11/16 inch for 8 inch hub. So too long.

Measured length from the bend in the spoke for an agled spoke.

Turned out it was the rim that was wrong - I hadn't realised that there were different spoke hole patterns in rims made for half-width hubs. When I used the correct one it all laced up OK.
