Hi,
Have a question if there should be a seal between the crankshaft and crankcase on the drive side on a BSA Sloper, and if so how is it done?
Hi there,
I haven't yet taken the engine apart on my 1929 ohv Sloper, but from the attached diagram, it looks as if there is no seal.
Cheers,
Bevan
Hi,
Bevan Thanks for your reply.
What makes me wonder is that there is a gap between the cush drive and the crankcase and think if there should be a seal in that space.
Have checked that it's the right model of cush drive I have.
Regards
Robert
Hi Robert.
Give me a day or two - I'll check with some of my contacts who have recently overhauled their Slopers and get back to you asap.
Cheers,
Bevan
Hi Robert,
This is the reply from a contract in Germany who has just rebuilt his Sloper:
"There is no seal. It's an open bearing just like in the g'box. I will have to check if there was even a thrust washer on the outside of the bearing which supposedly served as a seal, but I don't think so. On the outside of the case, there is a felt seal, conical in shape, pushed into a recess on the
crankcase, which then the inner primary case pushes against. Again the function of this felt seal was more to prevent dirt and grime from the outside getting into the bearing rather than preventing oil seeping out of the crankcase. I must say, mine doesn't leak through there with this arrangement."
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Bevan
Hi Bevan and many thanks for the answer!
It is very helpful.

Robert
