Title: 46 B31 gearbox swap
Post by: cdsdorset on 19 Jul, 2018, 12:51
Could anyone help me out with info regarding swapping from the early 46-48 gearbox to the later box.
Can it be done by just swapping to the later gearbox mounting plates and fitting the later box or is the easiest way to machine the mountings on the later gearbox and use the original mounting plates.
Any help would be appreciated or even just some links to useful info.
Thanks in advance.

I would think it should be possible to just swap the mounting plates- I dont know- but assume the frame mounting points are the same irrespective of the type of box- my B31 (1955) has an M-series gearbox but I've seen similar models with the B-series box- so I suspect they just differ on the mounting plate

If anyone has done the machining of the mounting lugs I would be interested in any information regarding how much to take off each side to get the chain to line up.

I am working up to doing this myself and am at the measuring up and dithering stage at the moment.

cheers
Pete

I'm a bit confused about gearbox / chain adjustment.
The 46/47 box is adjusted with a bolt into the rear of the box which attaches to the lower frame cross rail whereas the later one uses an external adjuster.
If the later plates are used is just the external adjuster fitted ?
