Title: B31 - how to remove large rear brake nut?
Post by: chrisb on 26 Jun, 2018, 21:16
More newbie problems (sorry).  Struggling to get my back brake off.  The service sheet says to remove nut J, which I think is the large one in the pic below, but it won't budge.   Is it a LH thread (ie clockwise to undo) or is there a knack to it?  I don't want to apply brute force in case I damage something.

Hi Chris, I just checked the setup on an M21 plunger that I'm rebuilding, and it's normal right hand thread.  Perhaps this was put on with threadlock or maybe its just rusted on or exceptionally tight.  It shoul just slacken up with some effort  :)  Glenn

Many thanks.  Would I be right in thinking it is a 3/4 Whitworth nut?  Given up with the adjustable spanner....

Finally got it off.  I can confirm it is a normal thread, and 3/4 Whitworth.  A socket with a breaker bar did the trick!  There isn't much room between the shock and the nut, so a big deep impact socket wouldn't slide all the way on unless the shock is removed so a standard (thinner) socket is probably worth a try first.

Glad to hear you shifted that nut, they can be challenging.

Just a word of caution however....don't remove a plunger unless you have to, they are full of surprises for the unwary.

My cuts and bruises have healed now but it was a steep and painful learning curve when I first ventured into that particular fun factory.

Cheers
Pete

Thanks Pete, for the advice - I'll stay away from removing the plunger!
