Title: B31 chain case
Post by: chrisgoodwin on 23 May, 2018, 23:41
Hello again,
The B31 is ready for the road but I am having problems with sealing the primary chain case.
At present I have a cork gasket greased well and the chain case set screws nipped up tight but she leaks like a sieve.
Time to ask for advice on how best to seal the damn thing, back in the day it was red hermie but I suspect things have moved on.
There seems to be a myriad of silicon gasket goos on the market, can anybody suggest a good sealant?
Cheers
Chris

I'm having a similar issue with mine: pressed steel chaincase, not leaking like a sieve, but definitely dripping when it's been used. It's the first time I've taken the chaincase off, so I put on a new cork gasket with a thin bead of generic instant gasket on both sides. Next time I'll be more liberal with the gasket goo, but again, any foolproof solutions welcome!

Mine (1953)  has been perfectly oiltight for the last 2 years - since I fitted an SRM clutch - new cork gasket and Wellseal. I use it for all joints and it's superb stuff. But then as Rolls Royce developed it, it would be wouldnt it? I shall be forever grateful to all those tiny beetles that gave their all to keep my Castrol where it should be - its shellac based  :)
I never use silicon stuff, especially where it has the opportunity to make its way into oilways and gauze filters. I found that the tank filter on my recently accquired AJS 650 was all but blocked by the damn stuff. Luckily a pre-use service and thorough clean of the oil tank etc discovered it just in time. If I get chance later Ill post a pic of the grizzly sight.

PS the SRM clutch is a revelation despite the cost. One finger clutch operation on a BSA is glorious!
