Title: Advance timing mark?
Post by: CROFTY1984 on 20 Apr, 2018, 21:57
A very basic question for most, so apologies! I'm putting a Wassell electronic ignition on my A65.
To get it roughly on, I need to get it at full advance.

I've got the timing cover off, I've identified the mark on the rotor. I'm either not understanding our I'm getting mixed messages.

There are some reference points on the case in the timing window. Screw holes at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. There are also 2 holes close together at about 5 o'clock, one of which has a pointer.
From what I've read, to have the engine at the full advance point I don't actually want to line the rotor mark up with the pointer, but with the 6 o'clock screw hole. Is that right? Or is it pointer all the way?

Thanks, Dan.

Hi Dan
I've been running with the Wassell ignition for over 5 years now and found it to be very reliable. You have to use the pointer on the primary cover I'm afraid; I don't really understand why you wouldn't want to as this indicates the fully advanced position of the crank.
One thing I did discover with the Wassell unit though, was that the static marks on my stator weren't very accurate. The photo shows the position of the marks when I had strobed the ignition at fully advance. In future if I need to disturb the ignition I would set it as near to the photo statically before checking it with the strobe.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jim, that's brilliant, thanks.
Sorry I meant "don't want to" as in "you don't wanna do that!" I have no strong emotional attachment to either solution :)
OK, so set timing rotor mark to pointer, use your photo for reference when fitting. Then strobe!
Thanks again,
Dan

Hi Jim, thanks for the advice:

Up and running! Need to sort ALL the other electrics out and strobe her properly, but I have a running, negative earth bike :)
Thanks again - I did think it was a little odd that my initial impression of what I'd read was "ignore the perfectly good pointer and use a screw hole"!

Sounds really sweet Dan. You must have really good idler gear bushes in the motor.
