Title: B40 centre stand
Post by: AdrianS on 13 Apr, 2018, 11:15
Finished rebuilding my B40 but left with a small problem.

The centre stand hits the silencer when taking the bike of the stand. I have put a bent long bolt with some thick rubber tube over it fixed to the cross member of the frame which the mudguard front fixes to, to act as a restrictor but not very happy with this.
I did notice the old original silencer had a dent underneath it ( not sure if caused by the stand or by a hammer).

Thinking about removing the stand and mig welding some blobs to the stand near the pivot to stop the stand retracting so far.
Is this acceptable? Any other suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

Adrian

Assuming the silencer is properly located, it must be the stops on the centre stand that are worn or the centre stand has too much free play on its pivot. If the former, I would definitely resort to welding to fix the problem. My B40 centre stand retracts to about 1cm from the bottom of the silencer.

At rest, my centre stand is probably about 1cm below the silencer but when pushing the bike off the stand the stand hits the silencer quite hard. It also did rattle a bit when riding so I am assuming something is worn somewhere. The pivot pins don't look too bad so I think it will be welding some stops onto the stand itself and then grinding them down to get the correct stand position!

Interesting. My B40 has a strategically placed piece of pipe-lagging on the cross member of the stand which stops it whacking the silencer.

(when the wheels are back on I may need to investigate wear .....but it does the job & hod it clear)

I have seen silencers with a small hollow on the bottom, to clear the stand, but cant remember which bike.

The centre stand snaps back against the stops every time it is raised - after 50 years, the stops get a bit battered and it's therefore not unusable to have to repair them. Just done a repair on a C15 centre stand.

I have a devil of a job getting my B40 on and off the main stand - have to get someone to help me.  Any advice please?   Phil.

PS noticed a strange thing in the sky this morning - large, round, golden object.
