Title: A65 not charging
Post by: Mannifc on 09 Apr, 2018, 19:15
Hi, Can the ammeter effect the charging system on my a65. All was fine until i took the battery off to trickle charge it, when i put it back on I stupidly connected the wrong way round and blew the fuse.
I then got new fuses and went and it did again, always had negative earth bikes.
I have tried a new regulator and still no charge, thinking of trying regulator/rectifier as an upgrade.
Can you cook the ammeter and prevent charge passing through it.
Stator is only a few years old converted to 12v single phase.
Regards,
Chris

The ammeter is not polarity sensitive so should not have been hurt by the reversed battery connection.

Disconnect the alternator at the snap connectors, with engine running you should get a voltage between the output wires.

Unfortunately, you will destroy the rectifier if you connect up the battery the wrong way round - this will happen before a 35A fuse blows. It will also result in forward bias of any Zener diode fitted which might also blow.

Some useful alternator information here.

If the rectifier fails and allows current to pass from battery to stator you will probably demagnetise the rotor.

The rectifier diodes would have burnt out more or less instantly which would have prevented any other damage being caused.
