Title: B31 front wheel spindle
Post by: sidewaysid on 30 Mar, 2018, 14:54
Hi Guys
The bike i am building is based on a 1947 frame, the forks came with the frame, they are tele's, also with it came the front wheel spindle, and this had a sleeve over it at one end, the spindle has a L/H thread, I purchased some other parts to complete the hub, these i got from Draganfly, and from the exploded diagram it looks as if this was what was required, well it seems I was wrong! The front hub I have has bearings held in by threaded discs (don't know the term) but can anyone throw some light as to what else is needed to make up the hub, I have a 7" brake plate that located on the small round boss on R/H fork leg, but i cannot seem to find what holds the brake plate on the spindle, am I working with odd parts ??? can someone show what should fit on the spindle.

Tearing my hair out yet again Ah ah ah

Thanks in advance.

Phil

The brake plate is held on with a nut (part 65 5893)- there is a nut either end of the centre sleeve (part 65 5889)

Spindle part 65 5894.

Distance piece 65 5892.

Brake plate 65 5895.

The service sheet below may help.

Also below pages from 1946 parts book showing the parts - same for 1947 - you can pick out the B31 parts.

Thanks for everything, hope you don't mind assisting me.

Can you post more photos of the hub please.

The 1955 C11G had a similar but different 7 inch hub/brake assembly to the B31.

I am not convinced that you have a B31 hub, these have only one bearing retainer, at the brake plate end. Yours is threaded for 2 retainers which means it could be C11g type or the type used on some unit singles, B44 C24 for example.

Photo is from 1967 B44 parts book.

Julian

I think you may be correct because I have part no 25.  I will have to start again

I am not doing a show machine, surely I can adapt what I have, The spindle fits the forks and the brake plate appears OK, all I need to do is make sure the hub stays where it is intended, I will post another pic I have taken today, Thanks Julian your a massive help.

Also I have this gearbox casing, and it seems to work with my frame lug, am I correct in saying, but the book shows it like the swing arm models, this does not seem to work with my frame/plates.
I like this set up, but other gearboxes of later years do not have this tapped hole in the casing, was wondering if the internals of a later box would fit into my casing..GOD my head is wrecked today

Cheers

Phil

The gearcase and adjuster features in the 1946, 1947 and 1948 parts books but not from 1949 when parts changed.

Below from 1946 book showing the gear cases, B31 second column from left photo 1.

The adjuster bottom left in photo 2. 65 4184.

Julian

It is hard work this ah ah, my frame is 1947 so that is the reason for the lug on the frame at rear of the box, however I have never seen a gearbox for sale with this facility, but I have the casing for one ! apparently it is 1938 ? I am bidding on a box on ebay now as I don't have one, but it does not have this adjuster, I suppose I will have to make and do as usual, I always said I only wanted to make a bike to run around on, I am a VMCC member and I used to go on the runs, and I miss the lads since I had no bike. So hoping this time next year I will have a B31 rigid of some breed or other to join them on the runs.

Thanks Julian

Looking back a bit further in the parts book, the adjuster 65 4184 which screws into the lug on the back of the case and  which is on the photos above is also fitted to the 1938 models B20 through to B26, 250cc and 350cc and it looks like most of those has the same or very similar gearboxes to each other. Whether the parts interchange with post war I do not know.
