Title: Carb leaking!
Post by: AdrianS on 28 Mar, 2018, 11:12
Hi
Just finished the complete rebuild of my 1961 B40.
Fired it up today for the first time since last July!
Now the snagging list starts:

New exhaust downpipe yellowed virtually immediately!

Oil leak from the oil feed pipes to the bottom of the engine.

Oil weep to one of the head feeds - new copper wshers to order.

Centre stand hitting silensor when taking the bike off the stand - bracket to make!

Biggest problem - leaking mononbloc. I did strip and clean the carb and fitted new gaskets etc but have got leaks from the bottom of the banjo intake; float chamber end, and from the main jet cover nut and the washer above!
Will remove the carb and bench test for leaks before refitting.
Never had problems with concentrics and cant remember problems in the past with monoblocs except for the float chamber end cap.
Any hints on curing the leaks? Can a smear of silicone gasket be used on the float end cap?
Any advice appreciated!

The float chamber covers distort with over tightening and are best replaced with new if they are distorted.

Bluing on the exhaust can be removed with Solvol Autosol. It takes a of rubbing but once removed it will not return.   8)

Regarding the carb Leaking, I'm surprised that the banjo and the main jet joints are leaking if you used new parts. The nylon Banjo filter should take care of the banjo joint but its wise to rub the face over a small piece of wet & dry on a flat surface to remove any high spots. The Main jet cover is a taper fit in the jet body so if both surfaces are clean and 'mark' free a good tighten with the spanner will suffice. The fibre washer between the jet body and the main body should suffice but again, rub the main body joint surface on the wet & dry to get a flat & square surface.
Re the float bowl end cover, they cost £7.90 +postage plus VAT from Hitchcocks (So will probably cost about £12 by the time theyve added it all up). So best buy a new one and again flatten the edge of the floatbowl on the wet & dry to get it flat oh! and  don't over-tighten when fitting. (Dont ask me how I know this).
Good luck with it
Chris

Have ordered a new end cap and gasket.

Will have a good look at the main jet cover area and will fill on the bench before refitting to make sure no leaks are present!

Managed to get a new gasket for the oil pipe connection. Noticed it is quite thin compared to the original one. Reluctant to use any sealant on it other than a smear of grease.
