I've found various advice here and elsewhere on how to remove rust from pitted rims ( which I have). I saw one reference here to using a 'sealer' to reduce the speed at which the rust will fight back. But I've not found much on such substances.
As I'll have the wheels off to change tyres it seems sensible to de-rust as much as possible. If there are sealers that can protect it thereafter ....then advice would be very welcome on the best susbstances/approach.
( My head is thinking that it might be more important to deal with the inside of the rim as the outside will dry quicker & I can get at them to polish. Haven't seem what the insides look like yet though)
There used to be product called Zoop, which worked really well on polished aluminium. Ive no idea whether it'll work for chrome, but I can't see why not. It's under another name now, but you should be able to find it on Google.
Alternatively a good coat of wax does well (though doesn't last all that long) or how about ACF50? I have my Guzzi treated with it every winter (including the chrome bits) and it works wonders.
Hi,
It sounds like the sealer you mentioned is a product that converts rust into a protective layer such as magnetite or iron tannate.
However, in my experience if the outside is pitted the inside is wrecked.
Best wishes....
Unfortunately, the best you can normally do is to remove the external rust (for example, using crumpled aluminium foil) to make the appearance of the rims a little better but it's difficult to do much about the pitting. In terms of the inside of the rim, you can always use a wire brush away to remove any rust that has formed and simply paint it with a rust inhibitor if necessary.
Beware of flaking chrome on the inside of a rim which can cut into a tube and puncture it.
The best solution is to replace the rims with alloy or stainless rims and stainless spokes
