Title: Progressive fork springs
Post by: Janacek on 24 Sep, 2026, 19:20
Does the tighter winding go to the top or the bottom? Or does it make no difference?

On rear shocks its usually at the top. But my instinct would be to put the closer (softer) coils at the bottom on forks because that its less un-sprung weight since the closer coils move first, but if I was right why are all the rear shocks the other way round? Curious

Surely the closer coils have more weight in one place than the wider coils so placing them at the top will give less unsprung weight, i.e. at the swinging arm.

As derek says It has something to do with unsprung weight the least weight at the bottom is better so on that basis tight springs at the top . but it probably makes no difference .

I doubt there's any real-world difference, but closer springs at the bottom looks far better.
