Hi to all again,
Following on from my previous posts about issues with my gearbox, I'm now at the stage of putting the drive side back together namely the chain wheel, crankshaft sprocket and chain.
When I took these off the clutch centre (with the pressed on plain plate)came away still attached to the chain wheel.I've tried taking it off due to the fact that every time I try to put everything back on in one piece, it invariably knocks the Woodruff key out.
Does anyone have an idea how I can take the clutch centre and plate out?
It's probably something simple that I'm missing but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Clarke
Hi Clarke,
I believe that you have the early 4 spring clutch. This has a second thrust washer and every thing is held in place by the plate on the back. It is fiddly to get it back on but cannot be reassembled on to the centre.
Try putting a bit of thread lock on the key and make sure it is well pressed in to the slot with a very slight angle towards the front. This will help to keep it in place. If it is a new key it may actually sit slightly proud so may need a bit dressing for a better fit.
As you present the clutch assembly to the shaft hold it up to give the best chance of the key engaging in the slot in the clutch.
Dave.
Thanks Dave.
I looked at the back of the chain wheel and the plate you mention has tying wire through the retaining bolts so I won't be going down that route. I'll try the thread lock.
When I had my Triumph the clutch centre came away an you were left with access to the rollers on the chain wheel which you could remove which gave you enough slack in the chain to remove the chain wheel and not disturb the crankshaft sprocket. Re- assembly was the reverse of the above as the instructions always say.
Thanks again and regards.
Clarke.
