Title: C15 Rear chain stretch?
Post by: Tigerfeet on 08 Aug, 2026, 15:25
Teething issues with my rebuilt C15F continue.

I put a new rear chain on the bike, bought from Autocycle Engineering, 'New Old Stock genuine BSA'. I also put a new rear sprocket/brake drum on as the original had teeth chipped off. 'Bsa Sprocket And Brake Drum 40-6018 45 Tooth' from Vale Onslow.  The brake drum mounting holes were inaccurately drilled - so I suspect it was made in the Far East  I have done four rides of about forty miles each. After each ride I have found the rear chain loose and so have readjusted it. I have now used half of the available adjustment.

The chain has plenty of lubrication - the C15 chain oiler actually works as intended.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on here? I have put new chains on other bikes and forgotten about them for several years...   I guess I'm going to have to take the chain off to examine it and the sprocket which is a pita with the chainguard etc..

So, you've done a couple of hundred miles on a brand new chain in essence.
I'd say that was a nice , settling in mileage and it shouldn't move much more for a while.
Yes the oiler works well on mine also.
Just ride it and let it settle.
I assume you use the gears to save any loading and snatching

All new chains stretch in the first hundred miles.

I had a Mountain Bike and got it a new expensive 'understretched' chain.  For the first few hours it would skip on the 11 and 12 tooth rear sprockets.   It took 4 hours of riding in mud before it was the correct length. . . Number of links in 10 inches.
