Title: not starting
Post by: Bradshaw on 25 Jul, 2026, 12:38
Good afternoon, having just completed my first total strip down and rebuild I was amazed when it actually started second kick !! however it was a short term victory because after a short tootle of a couple of miles it now refuses to start!! there is petrol in it and it's getting to the carb, the jets are clean and clear, the battery is charged and it has a great spark, don't quite know where to go from here and would appreciate any thoughts from the more experienced, its a D14/4 1968 with a D7 engine 1965

                                    Thanks Pete

Are you using a new D7 wiring harness as there are differences between the D14 and D7 dual switch models?

The actual switches are known to be troublesome at times and it may be prudent to replace them as I had issues with the ignition switch on my D10.

If you are getting a spark and fuel is at the carb, will it start if you put a few drips in the plug hole and try to start it?

The is an old saying "If you think there is an electrical fault it is probably fuel related" and "if you think its fuel then its electrical"

you have a spark, but is it a GOOD spark ?
lay the plug on top of the cylinder head and kick i over, is it a strong BLUE crack?
if not , firstly unscrew the plug cap and wedge the end of the HT lead in between 2 fins , giving you a 1/4" gap.
kick over, do you get a spark?
with your multimeter, check the OHMS value of your ht cap , preferably 0 ohms (non resistor)
if you have an HT neon tester, plug it in between the plug top and the plug cap and see if it sparks when trying to start

Hi
Following Coddy and Richard ... is it possible you have flooded the engine. There's a small drain plug underneath, remove it and see if any petroil comes out. It can be enough to prevent starting.

Clean the plug, confirm the correct oil mix, then put it in 2nd or 3rd and push with the throttle wide open. If it pops and splutters try closing the throttle a bit and it should start.  The bad news is that its hard work and could take 20 yards or more so enlist a helper.
