Title: 1939 G14 Cush drive bearing removal
Post by: PeterinOz on 25 Jul, 2026, 05:19
I have not been able to remove the Cush drive bearing, part number 27-788.  I have used an external bearing puller with the bearing cold and also heated with a butane torch.
I have a spare Cush drive bearing and it has a taper and key way.
Any advice on how to get it off will be greatly appreciated.

If you mean 26-778? From my experience of other models, these are just splined onto the shaft. Once the spring and sprocket are removed, it should slide off the shaft. If yours is seized on from years of corrosion, I would suggest more heat and lots of freeing oil.  Ron

Thanks Ron.  Yes 26-788, sorry for the typo.  I suspect it is corrosion and so more heat is what I thought.

My W35-7 has a tapered crank with a key. I made a puller that screwed onto the cush drive with a large bolt pushing on the crank. I wound up the bolt as tight as I could and gave the end of the bolt a hearty reminder with a hammer. The cush drive was tight and came off with a bang!

I can tell from the comments that these are different to the "splined" type that I'm used to! It's quite a lot of surface area to be hanging onto a taper plus keyway.

I think I'd get it under as much tension as possible with your puller or Thumpers idea, Lots of freeing oil and heat. Good Luck, Ron

Some of the earlier ones are tapered Ron.  I will be making some soon  :'(

Yes, lots of tension on a strong puller then try shocking it with two hammers from the sides. This may just expand the taper sleeve enough to break the grip.

Success!  I left the puller on under tension for a few days, maintained using WD40 during this time.  Then applied more tension and it came off like a spring.  Thanks for all your comments.
