Title: 2026 Hampshire branch camp CANCELLED.
Post by: rogereld on 24 Jul, 2026, 16:03
We have just learnt that unfortunately the Fox & Goose pub hosting our summer camp weekend has closed down. The camp for next weekend (31Jul - 2Aug) is officially cancelled. However the adjacent field is still booked and we have use for the weekend. If you still decide to come you should be prepared to provide your own food and drinks. Local shops are a 5 minute ride away.

Hi,

Although we were not intending to come this year it is sad to hear that the Hamps. weekend has been compromised.
Do not be disheartened.  Rather than cancel why not rename the weekend as a back to basics weekend as you have already outlined.  Norfolk Branch Weekend was such an event with tea and coffee available all day and a DIY BBQ on Sat. evening.  Facilities consisted of tap and a 'Tardis' chemical toilet.
We stopped a supermarket after the ride out for supplies and the evening went really well.  I am sure that it would not be beyond the resources of Hamps.  Branch to even do a chippy or pizza run for those who need it.

Dave.

The Norfolk branch weekend was my first branch camp but far from my first rally; it was great.

Hi,

Sorry!  I thought Hants. referred more to Northants.

Hants is the Post Office code for Hampshire

Nope, it's actually an abbreviation derived from the Roman name of the area "Hantsicura".
Royal Mail (not the Post Office) use  postcodes (and occasionally post towns) to sort mail, they've never used county names.

Hi,

More importantly, are the Hampshire Branch going to re-name their weekend rather that list it as cancelled?

Funny that when I worked at Francis Street Victoria London SW1 we used Hants.

As would everyone else when writing down an address in Hampshire, but still nothing to do with how RM (previously PO and GPO) sort mail though.
Just a county name abbreviation.

This is what we will be doing. A back to basics weekend. Tea and coffee will be available and a DIY barbecue available for anyone who wants to cook their own food on Friday/Saturday evening. News of the pub closure came 7 days before the event so we did not have much time to make alternative arrangements. Thankfully the camping field is still available.
