Title: A65 Rocket engine, gearbox clutch fluids
Post by: Cmcl.1959 on 01 Jun, 2026, 15:01
Hi to all again,
As I'm about to take the gearbox out in an an attempt to find the reason for the problem mentioned in my previous post, I thought I'd find out what oils other A65 owners use in their bikes to see if I'm putting the wrong stuff in mine.
At present I use 20w50 in the engine, ep90 in the gearbox and having seen a previous post am now using Automatic Transmission Fluid in the clutch.
Reading the owners and workshop manuals, these are much different to those recommended in them.
For example in the workshop manual, sae40 for the engine, sae50 for the gearbox and sae20 for the primary case.
Does anyone use these and is it more beneficial than the modern equivalents.
I'd be grateful to hear your thoughts.
Regards
Clarke

I've always believed(maybe incorrectly) , that the factory only had access to the oils around at the time 60 odd years ago.
These oils would have dictated mechanical tolerances etc.
Ep90 gl4 and gl5 today , we know the gl5 is detrimental to bronze bushes.
So , in a long winded way , I use monograde 40 in my C15 engine and gearbox and 20 in the clutch.

At least a oil change won't hurt.

EP 90 GL4 is my standard for boxes.  Used EP90 back in the day and now buy EP 90 GL4 as its the same spec.  I use Smith & Allen on e-bay for my oils.

Hi,

EP90 GL4 in gearbox, mineral ATF in primary and good quality 20/50 in the engine.
