The sidestand lug was broken off before I bought the bike thirty years ago...
As lifting the bike onto the mainstand is now getting difficult, I'd like to repair the sidestand. The bracket and spring post are still on the frame - it is just the shaped flat plate that has torn off. I was thinking that maybe I could get the right thickness steel, file the correct shape, and get my local welding man to weld it into place. He's had a look and reckons he can do it with the enine in place - just remove the exhaust.
Has anyone done this? I found an old thread that petered out in a discussion about whether the frame brackets were brazed or welded - without a conclusion.
You can get replacement weld on brackets, worth remembering as a fall back. I would file off the paint and see whether yours is brazed or welded. If its brazed just make sure he's aware. He should be able to build up a decent fillet a bit at a time to stop heat soak from melting the braze. Welders are good at this sort of stuff so I tend to leave them to it.
As part of this I am searching for a pre OIF sidestand. I want the part number 43-4778 item, with 68-4758 and 67-4889 apparently identical. But at the moment all that is available is the later 83-1560 item. This has a bigger head and I am reliably informed that the head fouls and stops it from retracting. My question is - does anyone know if the 83-1560 head can be ground down to make it fit?
I note that Feked state that the 83-1560 can be modified to fit pre OIF. But they don't say how. Not reply to queries.
Looking at pictures side by side, I suspect that be the time I ground off the 83-1560 to match the earlier ones, the mounting ears would have very little structural integrity.... But maybe it doesn't need to be taken back that far?
What is left on the frame? If you have the two bolt clamp part these can be made to mate up with a universal side stand.
I've just got a groove where the sidestand lug ripped off.
