Hi,
Working on my gearbox at the minute but have got myself mixed up.
Can anyone tell me which notch on gear control quadrant is 4th gear?
I think I have it in 4th at the minute.
Thanks in advance
Brian
AFAIK, the current position is 1st gear. HTH
Ok thanks,
I think I have messed up.
I set bike in 4th gear ( or so i thought), with the gearbox still in bike I took gearbox back plate of as I had to change the layshaft bush ( with cut out for speedo). When putting it back together I then set gear control quadrant in 4th, put everything back on , remembering to set the gear change ratchet lever in 4th also.
However when I tested bike I am only getting 2 gears ( no idea which ones) and a neutral. Thats why I was quering the correct notch for 4th gear.
I never touched gear cluster, which remained in situ. Is there anyway easy of telling which gear I left the cluster in?
Thanks in advance
Brian

For information I had definitely set the gear control quadrant in 4th......not what is shown in attached photo of my initial post.
Do you have access to BSA Service Sheet 608 which should help you? I found it on the below site.

Hi Ian,
I think I do.
Thanks
Brian
When you look at it you can see 1 notch (1st), a gap, a 2nd notch (neutral) a gap and 3 notches close together (2nd, 3rd and 4th). So in the photo the pawl is in 4th

Brian
I believe I was correct.

Yes Ian,
Thanks for this.
I got BSA service sheet 608 and that also confirms. looks like I may have to take gear box out totally and re-install from scratch.
Thanks for your help
Brian
No problem Brian. Glad to be of assistance :)
Thanks again Ian.
Brian
Hi,
I have a fairly detailed document on these gearboxes which includes hints on reassembly. If you are still having problems, let me know and I can forward it to you.
cheers
Pete
Pete,
That would be great if you could.
Can you dm on this forum so I can forward my email?
Thanks
Brian

Hi Pete,
I sent a PM to you with my email address.
I am only starting to do my own mechanics.....so quite unsure of a lot of things!
Many thanks
