Title: shiny new petrol tank
Post by: nablats on 22 Feb, 2026, 18:11
After too much faffing with cruddy old steel tanks, I decided to try a new polished ally tank. I went for just 2 gallons, with my senior status, I stop quite frequently. My thoughts are now about keeping it shiny and add some waterslide transfers or painting or a clear lacquer finish.
Any recommendations welcomed, atm I have it wrapped in a towel!

What bike is it and how is it used?
Its like engine cases, some people polish them to a mirror and keep them that way, some don't.
I don't keep my engine polished, just wiped with an oily rag.
If you polish the tank with a metal polish - Brasso Solvol, its vey clean and if its in a damp shed it will corrode quickly.  You can wax ally to stop that with the benefit that if you want to paint it later the wax is easy to strip off.

Thanks guys, will look into the wax option, not keen on the constant polishing. I have some petrol resistant clear lacquer on the shelf, might try some on the underside surface. This is a road rider, not a show bike, just want to protect it.
