Title: wire locking the clutch nuts
Post by: Tigerfeet on 13 Feb, 2026, 15:06
Does anyone have piccie they can pop on here of the correct way of wire locking the clutch nuts? I'm guessing they are all simply locked one to another in a continuous daisychain. But I guess they could also be done in pairs.  Google has failed to find such an image.

Either way would work but in pairs is easier.

Wire in pairs in a figure of 8 to prevent any rotation.
Twist the wire ends together in the middle and bend the twist over flat so it's not pointing out towards the chaincase. Clearance between the wires and the inside  of the chaincase may be minimal, if the clutch hasn't been lockwired before it may be worth checking clearance.
With a small screwdriver or similar, prise the middle portion of the wires away from the pressure plate, when the pressure plate is fully raised it must not contact the lockwires anywhere.

Just thought I would chip in and add to Rupert's answer.

I have lockwired my C15 clutch nuts in pairs which is pretty straight forward.  The only thing that was a pain is that the hole only runs from the edge of the screw head to the centre of the slot, it doesn't go to the other side of the screw head.  This means that you have to take your wire into the middle of the screw and then over the top which doesn't look very tidy and also allows the wire to slip off towards the centre of the screw head when you twist it.

All bolts that I have lockwired in the past have a hole from one side to the other which makes it simpler to achieve a nice neat job.  My solution was to use a small drill inserted into the original hole and then to drill through to the other side.  I then lockwired in pairs as per the picture below.  I found that handlebar grip lockwire was perfect for this job, it fits easily through the exisiting hole and twists nicely.

I hope this is some help.

Bill.

Hi Bill
I've just seen your post. I had another go at mine a few days ago and achieved a result that I thought acceptable. I must have got my nuts from the same supplier, as they are also only drilled on one side. If (when!) I need to go in there again I will follow your lead and drill through the other side!
Cheers
