Title: Bad Nuts!
Post by: Mark Cook on 01 Jan, 2026, 10:38
We noticed there are a lot of 15-4312 Clutch spring nuts about that are not fit for purpose, so we made some.

Nice job. Going to make any hex versions?

Thanks, but no.  I will be making a 1/2" drive socket to fit that may well have a hex to drive it as well.

Servicing my M20 clutch Saturday morning reminded me why a hex would be a bad idea.
I've designed a spring compressor that passes through the notches and has small protrusions to stop it sliding of the spring. This would not be so easy to do with a hex.  The notched version also gives better support for the spring.
BTW I'll make a production batch of the spring compressors after I get back from Sweden.

This is my spring compressor made of a couple of strips of mild steel and held in place with cable ties. Worked well on my C11 which I found impossible to fit the retaining nut to otherwise. Squeeze in the vice and apply retainers. Pop the whole lot on, start the nut, snip the cable ties and lever the retainers off carefully. Job done.

Well done Ian, I haven't thought about addressing the crank clutch yet.
