Title: B44 exhaust valve lifter
Post by: Flat Tyre on 27 Dec, 2025, 17:54
The only oil leak remaining on my B44ss is from the operating shaft of the exhaust valve lifter. There is some wear as it sits on the alloy rocker box, and after 50 odd years of abuse, I guess it will be worn.
Is there a solution to this, can I get it bushed anywhere, or just live with it, I don't want to omit it, as functionally it works.
Thanks for any info !

on my Victor , i had the same oil leak as the steel lifter shaft lived directly in the alloy rocker cover and - frankly - it was wobbling around and weeping.
I carefully found an appropriate bush on Ebay of a decent ID to accept the valve lifter shaft and an OD to match my drilling out the ovality of the worn hole.
from memory, there was not much meat in the rocker cover in that location - it did work nicely after and more positive in its valve lifting as all the cable movement was used in lifting the rocker arm .

Thanks rhyatt, sounds like the way to go, I will purchase a new lifter shaft,(if I can find a decent quality one!)and then look for a bush to match. Mines also seems to wobble and spits out oil, poor design really. The decompressor works great though.
Thanks again for your input

Sometimes slipping an o ring over the shaft works well enough as a temp fix, not sure if there's room on the B44.

I will need to take the shaft out again and measure for roundness, but if taking it out, best to get a new one anyway.
I thought about an o ring, think there is room behind the actuating lever, might try that as well as a temporary fix.
Thanks again for all advice

BSA fitted an 'O' ring as standard from new although it wasn't employed in an optimum position design wise.

Thanks Ian, saw there is a groove in the actuating shaft, but well outboard from the rocker cover. Obviously there could also be lateral wear in the rocker cover area where the shaft has been rubbing over the years. I'll have another look at this in springtime.
