On my rebuilt (yet to start) B40 I'm a bit concerned about the clutch ... the plates pull but are crooked.
I've fitted new (PES) springs but however I do it two of the adjusters have to be screwed maybe 1/4" further in than the other two ... is this normal?
BTW It's a distributor model with the clutch cable entering the back of the timing cover.
Hi Stuart,
have you checked all the plates, particularly the outer pressure plate for flatness ? on my C15, I screwed all the screws to correct positions with their heads just 1/8" above the pressure plate cup and then did final truing from there - (hold clutch in and kicking to check the outer plate wobble).
mine finished up not exactly equal but close enough not to worry - plus I got a sensible clutch lever action and quite light in operation.
I have the standard springs, are the PES springs lighter or heavier and of course the same length as original - try the original springs back in?
Something is not right. To get the pressure plate true you may have to vary the springs by 1/2 to one turn but no more.
A plate may be hung up or the basket is not on right. Is the push rod lined up on the centre of the plate? Does the B40 have a ball bearing in the centre (I can't remember), if it does and its fallen out it causes all sorts of problems.
Hi,
Check that the bolts are sitting properly. They are meant to sit/lock against the recess in the back of the clutch but they can be quite slack and can actually sit out of place.
Take the springs off and see if you can turn the bolts. Once you find that you cannot rotate them they should be in the proper place. Take care when fitting the pressure plate so the spring cups do not push them in a bit.
Dave.
When I rebuilt my Son's C15 recently , it's supposed rebuilt engine was short of a clutch plate , so check your plain and friction numbers
