Title: 6v to 12v
Post by: Mikey82 on 16 Oct, 2025, 14:56
Considering upgrading my 1963 Gold flash from 6v to 12v
It's got magneto and dynamo with an A reg rec/reg
I will need to replace 6v battery with 12v and upgrade bulbs to 12v will I need to do anything with the magneto and dynamo or the reg/rec unit
Or the points,  condenser or horn?
Thanks in advance

The Areg wll need some tinkering - can't remember what exactly. Horn will be louder, magneto isn't affected.

What is your objective?  The 6V LEDS are now very impressive and the 6V LED indicators work well.  I rewired my 59 A10 recently and stuck with 6v because I wanted the charging to come in at lower revs.  I did swap to a DVR reg and neg earth and its all working well.

+1

The only inconvenience with 6v is if a bulb goes and you're looking for a replacement at your local fuel station. But with LED bulbs this is less of an issue.

Increasing the speed of a 6v dynamo without changing the windings will burn the dynamo much quicker. Likewise running a standard dynamo at standard speed and expecting 12v will not yield many amps.

I'll get a link for a bulbs I'm using. They are very good and work between 6v to 24v

I have the 4300k white on my A10, but might go for the 3600k warm white next time. Warmer/yellow light is supposed to be better in inclement conditions as far as seeing the road was concerned.
