Title: A65 Build Started
Post by: Hook on 22 Sep, 2025, 19:46
After a lot of stops and starts my build has started this evening in earnest.
I enclose 4 pictures of the crankshaft end float and would appreciate your opinions please, I only have metric gauges and was used to imperial...have I got it right?
First one zero set with shaft pushed towards the timing side.
Second one reading with shaft pulled towards the altenator side.
3&4 same readings but not as clear.
Crank cases tightened properly.
If this reading is ok I can open it up and fit the con rods and camshaft.
Thank you..
P.S when I was an impatient youth I never bothered with this, just threw everything together and got away with it, but I and these engines are a lot older.

You want to aim for .001"-.002" of an inch before you apply the gasket goo, the goo will add about a thou. So in mm, your looking at .025-.05mm when setting.

The reason for the endfloat setting is to prevent the oil feed getting restricted or blocked by the journal. It lasts so long because the crank is pulled over to the timing side by the oil pump.

Thank you, so is the reading on picture CS2 .023mm, if so then I will have to remove the single shim and make it smaller.

The divisions on the dial are 0.01mm, so you have 0.24mm or roughly 0.0095" endfloat which is way too much. HTH

Or .21mm too much.

I have ordered a digital dial gauge!...that should sort out my antique brain and bring it kicking and screaming into the 21st century ;D

I find this s tricky job.  If you go for the factory setting there's a good change it will open up as soon as it get a decent hot run and the bearings you were sure were home solid find another thou or two.  I now aim for a though or so and bet on things bedding in.
