Hi,

They turn up on eBay. Yes you would need to remove the engine, clean the paint up in that area of the frame, slide the lug in place, weld to hold it, then wrap the lug around the frame, welding as you go.

If you can, spray the parts and the cleaned up frame with weld through primer.

Not wishing to hijack the post but can you elaborate a little ,as I have a replacement that I intend to fit .I assume that the old perch is cut off but what then is the replacement welded to . Would a round billet need to be fitted somehow in the frame ?

Is this lug brazed on?  I'm not sure they are welded. Have you cleaned it up to see if there's brass underneath?

A65's should be welded frames they certainly were by 1967, brazing I believe finished with the pre unit bikes. However, a previous bodge could be brazed instead of welded.

You cut the old lug off, clean up the frame, spot weld the new lug in place and make sure the bike sits correctly with the stand fitted and down. You can then weld about a 1/3 of the bracket then heat, tap with a hammer and weld as you go with the rest of it, cut any excess if any before welding it all shut.

I'd have to check my 67 frame, that'll take a few days as I work away. If that is factory brazing, it's worse than the weld splatter the rest of the frame got.

Either way, if there is braze, clean the steel up until the braze is removed.

Hi,

The fittings on the other side look brazed as do the the front engine mount lugs.  I suppose that they are not particularly load bearing and brazing possibly allows for a bit more adjustment during the process than welding.

Last year I did a respray on the frame, I remember that the motor mount lugs and the sidestand lug was brazed.
1970 A65 frame.

I won't comment either way until I've looked at both my 67 and 68, but I agree without looking that it would make sense for those to be brazed. Certainly for tidiness.

However, as I say, the brazing can be cleaned away and welded in its
Place. With the side stand lugs that are the wrap around type, welding is the only way of doing it, you couldn't apply the heat to help wrap the steel around the tube without softening the braze. - had someone tried to braze it.
