Title: A65 big end bolts
Post by: Chriss750 on 11 Sep, 2025, 18:51
Hi everyone. New to the forum so apologies if this has been done before. Rebuilding my A65L and ordered new big end bolts from what I regarded as a reputable ebay seller but the bolt heads are too big for the socketed bit in the con rod by about 9 thou. I could file them to fit but am a bit reluctant. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

The wonder of pattern parts.
If they can't get the basics right then the necessary metallurgy is always going to be suspect.
On Triumphs, I try and reuse un-waisted originals rather than Taiwan dirt-floor repro's if possible.
If you have no choice I'd gently and reluctantly file to fit.. :(

Look for some ARP bolts, the best you're going to get.

Most of the junk you'll find on eBay is all from the same source. Mostly from Wassel and there isn't much of that which isn't suspect.

While you're at it. Have the conrods checked for dimension. 0.0005" out of spec is out of spec. and a potential for big problems down the road.

Been there done that on my A10.  Very frustrating. I did trim them  bit and assembled it, then thought "no" took it all apart and bought a new set from SRM.  You did the right thing.  The bigger nuts can catch on the crankcase, thee's not much clearance.

Thanks for all the replies. I will look for some better bolts. I've returned to BSA's after a long gap - the last time I did serious engine work on one was 25-26 years ago - and it seems the parts situation has changed a bit.
Cheers
Chris.
