Title: A65 primary side
Post by: Cmcl.1959 on 26 Aug, 2025, 13:47
Hi to all,
As part of a service and to see if my clutch needed adjusting, I took off the primary side cover and found that the rubber boot that goes over the alternator cable to stop oil loss where it exists the casing was split and so was removed.
Can anyone recommend a sealant that I can use to seal the tube that the cable goes through. I tried one that said it was oil resistant gasket sealant but it was no good.
Not sure if something like insulating tape would last too long.
I doubt if I can pull the cable back through to fit a new boot.
Regards
Clarke

Hi,

A high temp. silicon sealant will work so long as every thing is very clean.  Brake cleaner does a good job.  Pulling the cable back through is doable but can be a pain to do.  Also, these wires and their sleeving can get quite brittle over time and pulling and bending them can result in the plastic cracking and coming off.
Another option is to get a new boot and cut it so you can get it over wires and then carefully superglue it back together before sliding it in to position.

Dave.

Hot melt glue may do the job.  I've noticed it being used in stead of grommets on a lot of new equipment.

Hi Dave and Rob,
I did give the area a good blast with brake cleaner before the sealant but obviously didn't get rid of all the oil so may try again.
Because I added a piece of heat shrink tubing to the cable to protect it when I fitted the stator, when I tried fitting a boot cut in half the cable was too wide so it wouldn't glue together.
I'd never thought of hot glue but that could be worth a try. Hopefully that wouldn't be affected by the oil.
Might also try another bit of heat shrink cut in two and superglued. So options available.
Thanks for the suggestions, most appreciated.
Best regards
