Which part number?  The spring is easy to get. Do you mean the plunger?

Hi,

The part number is 57-4008 but nobody seems to stock them.  The last ones had an off centre hole so that it could be rotated to adjust the spring for the most even load.

I see now, its only '68 on.  Klempfs have them at $12.50. There's a lot of BSA stuff still in the States.  Drop them an e-mail see what the post is.  I've bought from other US places and the post on small parts can be very reasonable.

Hi,

I tried to get stuff from USA recently and for some reason I would need to buy $200 plus postage worth of stuff and one supplier would not supply at all.  Something to do with tariffs. Exactly what I do not know.

Ah tariffs, forgot, I bought before the latest change.  I've bought from US suppliers who say "no overseas sales" but when you call and have a chat they are happy to help.  Put out a call on the BSAOC for a US member and have it posted to them, then get them to post it to you.  We often do this with Land Rover parts and I had to do the same to get a B31 dynamo to Norway, I'd stupidly managed to sell it for less than the duty so we "Pony Expressed" it via a member who regularly traveled to Norway on business.
Many years ago my (late) father got a Harley Sportster back from the States to the UK in his luggage, it took about 10 trips over 2 years but he was travelling with work. Anything is possible.
Another option my be to ask them to list it on e-bay.  I'm selling various bits on e-bay and some are going overseas. E-bay have some form of international shipping consolidation (I post to a warehouse in the midlands) now and seem to have found a loophole.

Hi,

What seems odd to me is that, as far as I know, the UK is not applying any tariffs to low value purchases and if so it would be the recipient, ie me/us, who would pay it as is happening in the US.

I suppose a bobbin could do the job so long as the spring cannot come over the top. The hole could be drilled off centre to give the adjustment.

After Brexit the whole duty thing was a bit up in the air. I could get stuff from the US and France no problem, buy the Germans made an absolute dogs breakfast of it. I had an order canceled after it had been shipped because the shipper made such a mess of the customs forms it got sent back to the seller. It was actually exempt.  Bought a part from from British Only Austria and it went very smoothly, may be worth checking them out.
If you do get it posted to someone in the US its a "used part" when they post it on so it should be exempt (obviously it helps to unwrap it and make it a bit oily..better safe than sorry)

Sorry for the delay, I found the inner timing case with the cup and spring attached on that "auction site" and snapped it up. Thank you for your help, I have bought parts from the States but get hammered on the postage everytime.

That's the centric cup for 1970. For 1970 the peg should have a flat which you rotate and position correctly. These appear frequently.

The 71-72 type has slots in the top and said peg should be round.

You could make an eccentric washer with the correct 5/16 hole and open the hole in the cup to say 7/16. Fit the eccentric washer and that will allow rotation of the cup for correct spring engagement.

Put that link up because I thought it was for a 1970 not the OIF.

Hi Rob, I don't think you get my point. BSA changed to the eccentric adjuster because it was better. Easier to get correct adjustment on the selector spring. If you were to fit one you would be better to go with the upgraded part. Quite possibly why you can get a 70 type anywhere but the later versions have all dried up. Hence my suggestion of how to modify a 70 type cup.

Thanks, now I get it.  I rebuilt one of these (OIF) many years ago and I have no recollection of needing to set this up so perhaps the centre position works in many cases?
