after an engine stripdown and full check, sludge trap, bush clearances, including valve guides, (by professionals), I refitted the engine and installed cylinder head with brand new amal concentric premier. After the usual check, tappets, timing, I tried a few kicks to check sparks (good), but found very little compression present, and the beast failed to start (a good thing)
I removed the carb to see if I left a rag in the manifold, and was disturbed to find a lot of shiny `shavings` in the manifold tract and carb throat. I am thinking they are also now glued to the valve seats...
The throttle action did not feel as smooth as I would have expected with a brand new premier, maybe the slide locating button has scraped against the groove, causing this chaff. I guess the head has to come back off?
I would agree. off with his head .Good luck !
Yes get the head off and lets hope you got it in time.
Hi,
I fitted two Amal Prems. but checked both before fitting and gave them a good clean. Bits in both but not like yours. Probably left after machining and not cleaned properly before assembly.
Send the image to Amal.
Dave.
Good plan- caused me a lot of work!
If I remember, there is a reminder to fitting new carbs and oil pumps that they are cleaned and checked for swarf prior to fitting.
Every machining practice goes through a deburr process, but until fluid is passed through swarf may be present.
We machined components for a hydraulic valve firm (fitted in diggers etc). we cleaned after deburring, then they went through plating. The batch was not accepted until the customer had put the valves through their cleaning process and their report was recorded. failure resulted in the batch being returned.
due to the small batches and lower skilled runs, I suspect swarf can get missed.
Even modern bikes have magnets in sump plugs as shavings may exist when gears are turning.
