Title: 1960 B33 barrel and head
Post by: RichardAB on 01 Jul, 2025, 19:16
Head and barrel ready to refit - your advice on following please
Note bottom of engine is in frame so top end to fit
Base gasket - fit dry or with sealant?
After fitting barrel do I then fit pushrod tube? Or Loose Fit tube to head and fit tube and head together. YouTube not conclusive.
Any other tips please?
Thank you

Before fitting barrel onto case, sparingly spread grinding paste onto top of barrel firelip and lap head to barrel as no head gasket is used. Remove the paste from head and barrel  then drop barrel onto case with supplied base gasket on case mouth. Now fit pushrod tube with base gasket to case then gland nut and gland seal fitted then fit pushrods. Now make sure both tappets in lowest position.
As you're lowering head onto barrel make sure pushrods located into rockers. Now nip head down with suitable spanner then tighten all necessary fittings for pushrod tube (bottom nuts slight nip first then glandnut after making sure it'll start on threads then fully tighten base nuts then gland nut). Use a C spanner for gland nut. That's how I do it and HTH.

Thank you. Do you fit the gaskets 'dry'

I use a slight smear of sealant on bottom face and silicone grease on top face, but this is my way.. Everyone has their own preference like with engine oil and sparkplugs!!
