Title: 1969 B25S chrome mudguards
Post by: MadPete on 12 Jun, 2025, 23:08
I need some 1969 B25S mudguards. The old ones were chrome but were obviously rusted to some degree and they were painted (not by me). I could possibly clean and re chrome but that would be a lot of cleaning/blasting/sanding. Are there any recommendations of restoration or where to get some reasonable new mudguards. I have seen some on ebay but they would need drilling and are in India.

I think the originals were chrome. It might be possible to sand and repaint the ones I have but worth finding if I have any sensible options before going down the referb. route. .

When restoring my 1968 B44, I looked for Triumph TR25W and BSA WD B40 mudguards as they are very similar due to frames being basically the same. So my front guard is from a TR25W from where I removed the paint before having it chromed. The rear guard was sold to me as being for a WD B40, again painted so I did same before chroming. HTH

How about Chrome powder-coating? Not perfect but looks OK.

Hmmm... Intersting suggestions. Thanks for these comments.
I will keep an eye out for TRW front guards and I will investigate chrome powder coating. Not come across that before - only zinc powder coating.

How about spray on chrome (https://www.chromespray.co.uk/)? I can see the in the near future this might be the only option available as the chemicals used in chrome plating become banned.

Thanks for power/spray chrome suggestions. They can be quite good but must usually be lacquered with a protective coat as the straight chrome finish can darken. It makes for a neat "Black" but more "dark" chrome finish but to keep it silver it usually needs the top coat. if I did the tank like that I could get a neat "candy" blue finish as well.

As it is I have looked at the old pair and as there is no serious rust I will get them shot blasted and see how the metal looks. Other people recommend Stainless steel and mention "Speedwell" but they are not an inexpensive or instant fit option. Or £200 quid for a set sent from India. Seeing as they make many "British" bikes in India now - it might be a viable option.
