Title: B25 spring washers for outer casing screws
Post by: Beesy on 23 Apr, 2025, 21:46
I'm hoping someone can clear up a doubt I have in my head.

I rebuilt my Starfire engine 12 years ago and now I'm doing another one.

I have a feeling that there should be small spring washers under the outer casing screws but I can't see any on any diagrams or parts lists.

I'm sure I didn't imagine it. Can anyone confirm?

Regards

Have had dozens of bikes ranging from 1930 to 2013, including 6 BSA singles.
Never seen any spring washers on any outer case screws.

Hi,

No spring washers and do not over tighten them.  make sure the threads are clean and that there is no old sealant at the bottom of the hole.  I try to keep the threads dry to ensure better grip with least torque.

Dave.

I agree. No spring washers on the case screws.

If you are concerned about washers, you c0uld have a look at Hitchcock's website and search for 140771 Timing Cover Screw Fibre Washers. These are tiny 1/4" ID washers that some manufacturers fitted.... (Royal Enfield?)
They're probably not necessary, but it's up to you.

I fit those washers to the alloy A/B series chaincase drain and level screws as per the manual - not convinced they make much of a difference tho'.
